Marvels of nature
The splendid surroundings of Megeve are something everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. The wonderful scenery which spans across a few km of pathways, makes for a very pleasant stroll in the heart of one of France’s most beautiful regions.
Quite unique in France, due to its history and characteristics, the Calvary trail is a very pleasant and cultural walk set in relaxing surroundings. Take the trail leading uphill, facing the Casino underground car park. Quite quick, this takes you to the Saint Michel cross. From there follow a little road going up and you will arrive on a small esplanade where you will discover the seven beautiful chapels dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the 14 Stations of Cross that make up the Chemin de Croix (Cross trail). Inside these small edifices, life size statues represent different scenes of Christ’s Passion in a style of blended Gothic, Baroque, Rococo and Tuscan.
On the plateau, turn right into rue Edmond de Rothschild and continue for 1 km going towards Cote 2000, until you reach the hamlet of Maz. Be sure to take your time and visit the chapel with the red and green clock dial. After this take the Chemin de Maz facing the chapel, go down for about 800 m, then fork to the right to reach the Belle aux Bois waterfall, which is a very beautiful natural heritage in the region. The waterfall is extremely beautiful seen up close, so you might want to consider canyoning.
The stroll could be quite tiring, but when it comes to the natural beauty of this region, it is really worth the effort to see such breathtaking scenery.
